Fair Lawn is a borough of approximately 30,000 people, located 22 miles from New York City. Fair Lawn is accessible from the following major highways: Rt. 4, Rt. 17, Rt. 80, Rt. 46, the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway, 9W, and the Palisades Interstate.
Lenapi - The Town's Planners
The Lenapi tribe originally inhabited the area encompassed by Fair Lawn. In fact, the roads and towns in the area were built to correspond to the Lenipi tribe's trails and shelters. Until sometime around 1790, the town was called Slooterdam. This name came from the early Dutch settlers. It's the name the Dutch gave to the fish trap the Lenapi used, which can still be seen at low water in the Passaic River. The trap is made from two rows of stones laid in the shape of a V. The Lenapi went fishing by herding fish into the V-shaped dam, then simply picking them out of the water.
Early Fair Lawn Real Estate
There are a number of homes still standing that illustrate the type of homes that were first constructed in the area. The Garreston Forge and Farm Restoration is the site of the Garreston-Brocker home; it was originally a large plantation that spanned the area between the Passaic and Saddle Rivers. Some early Fair Lawn homes were built of sandstone, such as the GVH Berdan House.
The Evolution of Fair Lawn
Fair Lawn grew most rapidly in the 1940's and 1950's. The last farm in the borough was developed as apartments in 1998. The town began as an agricultural village. It is now a suburban area that combines bedroom communities with industrial parks that house companies such as Kodak, Nabisco, and Lea & Perrins.
